Summary: 1) Concepts and terminology. Environment - host - herbivorous insect relationship. 2) Terminology regarding the host (resistant, tolerant, escape). Host resistance: mono- or polygenic, induced, vertical or horizontal, durability. Herbivorous terminology: mono- or polyphagous, specialist or generalist, 3) Insect signals to activate plant defenses and Plant signals to activate location by insects. Tri-trophic interaction. 4) Defense genes and proteins activated by the damage and feeding of the herbivorous insect, and its use as markers or in transgenic strategies to increase resistance.
